February 2014. On the road again.

Well hello blog.

It has been a while but as the title of the blog mentions motorhomes I guess it should be about our travels and as it’s still winter we haven’t been doing a lot of that. Oh, we’ve thought about travelling a bit, in fact quite a lot, over the last few months but what with wet and miserable weather plus lots of jobs to do at home thoughts and dreams is about as far as we’ve got.

We did sneak a weekend away at the end of January, which happily coincided with my birthday, when we went back to Sandringham in Norfolk. We were last there at the end of October when we stopped for a few days on the way home from a trip to Lincolnshire. I had seen on Facebook that RAF Marham had an open day at their Heritage Centre/museum on the last Saturday of the month and since we were nearby we tootled along for a look. We spent a couple of hours looking at the displays showing the history of the base and the squadrons and aircraft stationed there. Whilst there we bought some raffle tickets which we promptly forgot about until, just before Christmas, I received a phone call to say that I had won the prize and could we call in and collect it when they were next open at the end of January. It would have been an easy drive to Marham and back but it seemed a good excuse for a little trip in the motorhome so three nights were booked at the CC Sandringham site. The prize we went to collect was a large framed photograph of a Tornado GR4 from No. 2 Sqn based at Marham flying over the Shard in London during the Queens Birthday Flypast in June 2013. The picture had been the winning entry in the RAF photo competition for 2013 and was taken from the back seat of another GR4.

Nearly a month later we had lunch with some caravanning friends, Jenny and John (www.jennyandjohngocaravanning.wordpress.com) and Alan and Sylvia where the talk was very much about travel plans for the coming year. Within 24 hrs we decided we had itchy feet and needed to get away again.

So, It is the end of February and I am sitting writing this in the M/H with the sun streaming in through the windows and looking out to the Derbyshire Peaks. We are at the CC site at Castleton (GPS 53°20’50.32″N 1°45’56.39″W) which is a very handy ten minute stroll from the lovely village with its shops and pubs. Although the site is quite wooded most of the trees are birch which are light and open and with no leaves at this time of year the surrounding hills are quite visible through the branches. I expected the site to be almost empty at the end of February but many of the schools seem to still be on half term holidays so most of the pitches are full. We are staying here for four nights and them going further north.
